TECHNICAL DETAILS
Welcome to the Morning Star musical data base. Morning Star
provides an environment for playing music. No special sound
production hardware is necessary for Morning Star. Morning Star is
made to operate on the IBM or 100% IBM compatible personal computer
with CGA, MCGA, EGA or VGA graphic capability. An 8086 or later
CPU is required. Morning Star works with the DOS operating system
version 3.0 or above. Star can also operate in the DOS
compatibility window of OS/2 Version 1.3 refresh level 1.30.1 or
above. The music is played on the speaker which comes with your
computer. No special hardware is required.
Morning Star reproduces tones accurately as regards both frequency
and duration. The program's limits on timing and frequency are
well within limits of detection by trained musicians. This means
the tones will sound brighter and clearer than before.
Morning Star overcomes many barriers to music production on the
personal computer. Many Christmas carols played on a computer
sound sort of flat, just not quite right. The cause of these
bizarre tones is the rounding off of frequencies. Most music
programs play tones rounded off to the nearest whole cycle per
second. This isn't enough to change the tone by even a half step
but it is enough to noticeably alter the harmonic relationship of
the tones.
Morning Star incorporates special computer code to play The RIGHT
TONE at the RIGHT TIME(TM). The smallest difference a trained ear
can detect is approximately 0.19% at 440 Hertz.(1) Timing
variances as small as 0.01 seconds would be detected by well
trained musicians.(ibid) The tonal accuracy and timing control in
Morning Star is will within these limits.
To enter the Morning Star musical data base, ensure you are in the
directory containing "PLAY.EXE", then type "PLAY".
